James P. Lees

Across more than eight years working on ambitious global storytelling projects, I've learned that the most extraordinary stories are often hidden in plain sight. From remote expeditions and landmark factual series to working with Sir David Attenborough, those experiences have shaped a creative approach built on curiosity and visual storytelling.

Today, I develop and direct films across documentary, culture and commercial projects, bringing that same perspective in exploration of the relationship between people, place and the natural world.

"We are not apart from nature; we are a part of nature."

The shots here reflect an approach that runs through much of my work. The below, directed for The Americas, draws on the visual language of cinema to make a real story feel more immediate, emotional and memorable. Regardless of format, I'm interested in finding unexpected perspectives and creative ideas that reveal something deeper about the world around us.
